Portland Beavers News Release

SALT LAKE CITY - Jon Knott tied a modern team record for RBIs in a season by hitting his 30th home run, and Matt Blank gave up just one run over six strong innings as the Portland Beavers defeated the Salt Lake Bees 3-1 in the first game of their season-ending series Friday night at Franklin Covey Field.

Knott became the first Portland batter since 1972 to hit 30 home runs in a season with a ninth-inning solo shot. The RBI was his 109th of the season, tying a team record in the Pacific Coast League's modern era; Dan Briggs had 109 RBIs for the Beavers in 1978.

Jack Cust drove in a pair of runs to back Blank's quality start. Blank (3-3), making his third start for the Beavers, did not allow a walk and gave up just five hits. The left-hander struck out five.

Steve Andrade worked two scoreless innings and Jason Anderson closed out the ninth to earn his fourth save.

Cust's RBI single in the first inning scored Ben Johnson to get the scoring underway. His RBI double in the fourth broke a 1-1 tie.

Steven Shell, who was impressive in a victory over the Beavers at PGE Park Aug. 22, struck out six and allowed just two runs over seven innings in the hard-luck loss. The right-hander did not allow a walk and yielded six hits.

Casey Smith doubled and scored on an RBI single from Dallas McPherson in the bottom of the first for Salt Lake's lone run.

The Beavers (67-73) and Bees (78-62) play a doubleheader Saturday night.
