Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS - The Fort Myers Miracle now lead the Charlotte Stone Crabs by one game in the Florida State League South after Sunday's 6-5 final that featured clutch hitting late in the game and a sparkling performance from the bullpen.
With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Deibinson Romero atoned for his error in the top of the inning with a sacrifice fly to deep left to score Danny Lehmann from third with the winning run. After the Stone Crabs jumped on top with a five-run third inning, the Miracle chipped away with three in the sixth and two in the eighth before the walkoff sac fly in the ninth. After scoring just three runs in the series' first two games, Fort Myers broke out with 12 in the final pair.
Alex Burnett (1-1) earned his first win in 2009 with two innings, no hits, and two strikeouts after Santos Arias threw a scoreless three innings of no-hit, one-walk, two-strikeout ball in relief of Tyler Robertson. The left-hander's outing was marred by two walks to lead off the third. The big blow was a three-run home run off the camera deck in left-center field by first baseman Cody Cipriano. To his credit, Robertson didn't allow a run in the third or fourth after the homer before he gave way to Arias.
Combined, the Miracle pen threw a hitless five innings and struck out four. The Charlotte pen, however, failed to support David Newmann, who was in search of his second victory. Newmann pitched well in six innings with five hits, three runs, a walk, and five strikeouts. He seemed to run out of gas in the sixth, giving up three runs, but still finished the inning with the lead.
Rayner Oliveros gave up two more runs in the seventh to tie it before Austin Hinkle (1-1) lost it in the ninth. Hinkle threw one and two- thirds, allowing one unearned run, while walking two and fanning two.
Rene Leveret was the only Miracle with a multihit game, finishing 2- for-4 with a run scored and two doubles. Steve Singleton was 1-for-4 with two RBI, Romero was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, and Chris Parmelee had an RBI sacrifice fly.
Ben Revere didn't start but drew a walk as a pinch hitter to celebrate his 21st birthday.
The Miracle travel to Sarasota for a three-game series with the Reds starting Monday at 7:00. Mike McCardell (2-2, 4.71) faces Jerry Gil (0-4, 10.20).
