Daytona Tortugas News Release

The Daytona Cubs (11-14) offense continued to stay hot on the road as they shutout the Tampa Yankees (9-15), 6-0.

The Cubs dented the scoreboard with a run in the top of the first inning. Third baseman Jake Opitz continued his hot hitting since joining the Cubs with a one-out single. Left fielder Tyler Colvin followed with a single of his own. Yankees starter Lance Pendleton (2-2) then loaded the bases as he walked designated hitter Russ Canzler. With the bases juiced, shortstop Marwin Gonzalez brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Cubs second run came in the third inning as Canzler brought in Colvin on a double to deep left-center field.

Daytona did more damage in the top of the fifth inning as the first four batters to the plate all scored. Center fielder Tony Campana led off with a bunt single before Opitz picked up his second base hit. Tyler Colvin then ripped a double down the line to extend the lead to 3-0. Russ Canzler had the biggest hit of them all as he planted one beyond the left field wall to put the Cubs up 6-0. The long ball was Canzler's second of the season.

That would be plenty of run support for Cubs starter Rafael Dolis (1-3) who picked up his first victory of the year. Dolis pitched five innings of scoreless baseball and struck out five batters.

The Cubs bullpen picked up right where Dolis left off and completed the shutout of the Yankees, the third shutout produced from the Cubs pitching staff on the year.

The Cubs and Yankees will play game two of the three game series tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
