Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE -- Faced with falling farther behind in the FSL South in the event of a loss, the Fort Myers Miracle (13-9) were handed a strong start from David Bromberg, who won his second, as the team rode an early 5-0 lead to a 6-4 final at Charlotte Sports Park to tie the Charlotte Stone Crabs (13-9) for division supremacy.
Bromberg (2-0) threw five innings and struck out three, giving up four hits, two runs, and four walks. He was backed by a Miracle offense that scored more runs in the first two innings than the first two games of the series combined. Fort Myers jumped on top early after loading the bases in the first with singles from Steve Singleton and Ben Revere and a hit by pitch of Rene Leveret. With the bases loaded and one out, Chris Parmelee drilled a two-RBI single to make it 2-0.
In the second inning, Mark Dolenc, hitting in the leadoff slot for the first time in 2009, tripled with two outs. Singleton doubled to score Dolenc and later scored on a Revere single. Manager Jeff Smith's new-look lineup -- with Dolenc first, Revere third, and Romero sixth -- resulted in six runs. Chris Parmelee launched his fourth home run of the season on a line drive into the Charlotte bullpen leading off the third. It was the outfielder's first since April 21st and his third in just four games at Charlotte Sports Park.
Jesse Darcy (0-2) lost his second decision to the Miracle with a six-inning, 10-hit, and five-run outing. The Miracle scored an unearned run against Kevin Boggan in the eighth.
Steve Hirschfeld allowed two runs, one earned, in two innings of work. He allowed one hit -- a sixth-inning Matt Fields solo home run -- and walked one. Henry Arias recorded his first save in the Twins organization with two innings, one hit, one walk, and one strikeout.
Every Miracle batter had at least one hit, save for designated hitter Jair Fernandez. Chris Parmelee finished a triple shy of the cycle at 3-for-4, with a double, home run, two runs scored, and three RBI. Singleton went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, while Revere was 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI of his own.
Mark Dolenc was 1-for-5 with a triple.
Fort Myers returns home to host the Charlotte Stone Crabs in the final game of the series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. David Newmann (1-1, 5.59) and Tyler Robertson (1-0, 4.30) face off in a battle of southpaws at Hammond Stadium.
