Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

JUPITER, FL (May 17, 2006) - The Fort Myers Miracle offense was kept bottled up on Tuesday night managing just two hits. They uncorked that bottle on Wednesday evening as they pounded out 14 hits and defeated the Palm Beach Cardinals 6-1 at Roger Dean Stadium.

The Miracle, who improved to 22-17, pounded out seven hits over the first three innings, but managed just one run. In the second inning Brock Peterson led off with a double to left and one out later Luke Hughes singled to left to drive in Peterson and make it 1-0. From there it became a pitchers duel with Miracle starter Kyle Aselton tossing a gem.

The only run he allowed came in the sixth. He gave up a lead off triple to Tyler Greene, but managed to get the next two outs without giving up a run. Terry Evans, the Cardinals hero from the night before, battled Aselton and then hit a little squirter down the first base line for a run scoring double to tie the game at one. Aselton went 7.0 innings allowing one run on four hits while walking one and striking out four and picked up his fourth victory of the season.

The Miracle scored five unanswered runs after the Cardinals tied it up. In the seventh, Alexi Casilla led off with a single to center. With one out he moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Garrett Guzman's double to right to put the Miracle back in front 2-1.

The Miracle scored four insurance runs in the eighth on five consecutive hits. With one out Johnny Woodard singled to center. Luke Hughes then hit his second homer of the season, the first since opening night, a two run shot over the left field wall. Justin Arneson followed with a single to left and moved to third on Casilla's single to left. Matt Tolbert then doubled to right which scored Arneson and Casilla scored when the throw from the right fielder got away from the shortstop Greene who was covering second. Eight of nine Miracle starters had a hit and Hughes finished 2-3 with a homer, three RBI and a run scored while Casilla was 3-5 with two runs scored.

Danny Powers tossed the final two innings for the Miracle striking out five of the six Cardinals he faced.

The Miracle and Cardinals play the finale of the four game series Thursday morning at 10:35 a.m. The Miracle send LHP Jose Mijares (0-2, 6.17) to the hill against Cardinals RHP Mitchell Boggs (2-2, 5.84).
