Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

EVANS STRIKES BACK

The Palm Beach Cardinals followed up a season-high twelve strikeouts with another eleven on Tuesday night, but all it took was a Terry Evans solo shot in the ninth for the Cardinals to walk-off with a 1-0 victory over the Ft. Myers Miracle at Roger Dean Stadium.

Evans lifted a 3-2 pitch off of reliever Chris Shutt just over the centerfield wall, for his tenth round tripper of the year and third walk-off hit here at the stadium. Shutt (0-1) took over in the eighth inning after starter Kevin Slowey pitched seven shutout innings- surrendering only three hits, walking none and striking out ten. The Miracle (21-17) right-hander has posted an uncanny 63 strikeouts to 2 walks this season.

Palm Beach (20-17) starter Blake Hawksworth proved a worth opponent to the Miracle starter, working six scoreless innings of his own, giving up an Alexi Casilla infield single in the fourth. After a 90-minute rain delay, Hawksworth said, "The tough part is staying dialed in with the start time constantly being pushed back." He also added, "I was a little off balance at times in the stretch, but Brady and I had a great pace for the entire game. Closer Mike Sillman (3-0) gained the victory working the ninth, after allowing a lead-off single to Garrett Guzman, which was only his second hit allowed at home on the season.

MIRACLE ON MAIN STREET

- Ft. Myers came into the four game series dropping two in a row to Daytona. The Miracle are currently ranked 11th in the Florida State League with a .238 AVG (Tampa .228) and hold the 4th spot with a 3.57 ERA. Offensively the team is led by lead-off man, Alexi Casilla, currently batting .303 and his 14 stolen bases ranks him 4th in the FSL , behind Cardinal Terry Evans (15).

On the hill, Matt Garza was the ace until he was called up Monday to New Britain after leading the FSL in wins with 5 and ranking 3rd with a 1.42 ERA.

- Last year Palm Beach split the season series between the two (1-3 Home, 3-1 Road) and hit a poor .219 against Miracle pitching. The Cardinals suffered a power outage during the eight games as well, hitting only 1 homerun.

NEW FACES

- Troy Cate, Matt Dryer and Wes Swackhamer were added to the roster just before and during the past road trip. Cate was called up from Extended Spring Training (5/8) and saw his first action on 5/9 (1 IP, 1 H). He currently has no record with a 5.79 ERA after making 4 appearances, with his longest of 1 2/3 innings coming Monday night. Dryer joined the club for the final two games of the Clearwater series (5/8) after being moved down from Springfield (20 G, .217 AVG, 2 HR, 7 RBI). He has started at 3rd base in all 8 games he's appeared in and currently is batting an improved .300 with 2 homeruns and 4 RBIs. Matt is no stranger to Palm Beach, playing 121 games with the club during the 2005 season (219 AVG, 21 HR, 76 RBI). Swackhamer came aboard for the final game of the home series between St. Lucie (5/5) after being called up from Quad Cities (292 AVG, 5 RBI). Since the call up, Wes has played in 10 of 11 games and is hitting .250 while knocking in 5. He spent all of 2005 as a member of Quad Cities (91G, 239 AVG, 6 HR, 30 RBI)

- All of these moves came after Chris Patrick was released from the team on May 5, Justin Garza moved up to Double-A Springfield and Jason Motte going to Extended Spring. Garza has made 3 appearances with Springfield, working 6 innings and not surrendering a run.
