Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
TAMPA , FL - The Fort Myers Miracle are thankful June only has 30 days in it because the month wasn't kind to them as they lost for the 16th time in June, 7-2 to the Tampa Yankees on Friday night at Legends Field completing a 1-5 road trip and a 10-16 month.
The Miracle were taking on a Yankee starter who was 1-7, albeit with a solid 3.88 ERA, but Phil Coke hadn't won in five weeks. All that changed on Friday, although the Miracle got off to a promising start. In the first inning Brandon Roberts reached on a fielding error by Coke and Juan Delgado blasted a two run homer to left, his first of the season to give the Miracle a 2-0 lead. That would be the last bright spot of the evening.
The Yankees tied it in the third when Rudy Guillen crushed a solo shot over the center field wall, his fifth of the season. With one out Hector Made singled and Victor Hall walked. One out later Miracle starter Justin Jones gave up a two out RBI single to Cody Ehlers to tie the game at two.
The Yankees took the lead for good in the fourth when they loaded the bases with nobody out on back-to-back singles by P.J. Pilittere and Edwar Gonzalez and a walk to Mark Carroll. Guillen's grounder got the run home to make it 3-2, but Jones worked out of the rest of the jam by striking out Greg Sain and getting Made to ground out. Jones went 6.0 innings allowing three runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out three.
Coke held on to the lead working 6.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out five in picking up his first win since May 22. The Yankees got all the insurance they needed in the seventh off of Miracle reliever Chris Schutt. They loaded the bases on a single by Made, a bunt single by Hall and then Schutt hit Ramiro Pena, who was trying to sacrifice. Ehlers followed with a bases clearing double to make it 6-2 and one out later Gonzalez singled home Ehlers.
The Miracle head home for a three game series against the Dunedin Blue Jays beginning Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send LHP Brian Duensing (1-3, 3.81) to the hill against Blue Jay RHP Orlando Trias (8-4, 3.55). It is the first of two Independence Weekend fireworks shows presented by Budweiser, Modern Service, Seminole Casino, WXKB 103.9 & WJPT 106.3. The game can be heard live on 91.5 Kingdom FM.
