Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach, FL) - Jemel Spearman completed a terrific 3-game series in Vero Beach with a 2-run, 9th-inning double that gave Daytona a 5-4 win over the Dodgers Friday night at Holman Stadium. Spearman finished the series with 6 RBI. The Dodgers dropped to 11-23 in one-run games this year. Vero Beach travels to Tradition Field in St. Lucie for a 7:00 PM game Saturday night. The Dodgers held two different leads Friday night. Vero scored the game's first runs in the second inning against Daytona starter Justin Berg. Hot-hitting Anthony Raglani led off with a double and Cory Dunlap singled him home. Later in the inning Cole Bruce walked and scored on a Ryder Mathias base hit. Vero starter Jonathan Figueroa turned in his most effective start of the year, but could not hold the lead. After blanking the Cubs for the first three innings, DH Olin Wick blasted a two-run homer to tie it. Figueroa ended with five innings of work and the Wick homer accounted for the only runs against him. The Dodgers reclaimed the lead in the 6th. Dunlap led off with a walk and went to second when Cubs catcher Jake Muyco bobbled Bruce's bunt. David Nicholson's grounder then resulted in a force play at second, but the relay to first was thrown away and Dunlap crossed home plate. Mike Megrew held the lead with two scoreless relief innings and Jose "Jumbo" Diaz pitched a perfect 8th. Diaz stayed on for the 9th and immediately ran into trouble by walking Wick. One out later Jonathan Mota singled to left and Joe Simokaitis reached on a bunt to load the bases. Andy Lane's ground out brought in the tying run and Spearman followed with his decisive double. Vero Beach made it interesting in the bottom of the 9th. Jamie Hoffman led off with a double against Cubs closer Adalberto Mendez. He scored on a Blake DeWitt ground out. Adolfo Gonzalez then walked but Raglani was retired on a scorching line drive to left to end the game.
