Cliff Floyd Lifts St. Lucie Mets Over Dodgers

September 1, 2006 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Port St. Lucie, FL) - Cliff Floyd made an impressive injury rehab appearance, blasting two home runs to lead the St. Lucie Mets to a 6-1 victory over the Vero Beach Dodgers at Tradition Field Friday night. Xavier Paul knocked in the only run for the Dodgers. The series continues Saturday night at 7:00 PM.

The Dodgers kept it close until the sixth. Vero had intentionally walked Floyd earlier in the game, but with a man on and two outs in the sixth, the former All Star crushed a towering home run to right field to give the Mets a 4-1 lead. He added another 2-run blast in the eighth to put the icing on a 6-1 win.

The lone Dodger run scored in the fifth. Brian Mathews, in his first game with Vero Beach since a promotion from the Gulf Coast League, drew a walk. He scored all the way from first base on an Xavier Paul double. At the time it pulled the Dodgers within a run.

Blake Eager (5-3) earned the win for St. Lucie. He tossed seven innings and allowed just the one run on five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Edgar Alfonzo pitched the final two innings for his sixth save.

Cory Wade (2-4) took the loss despite surrendering a season-low four runs in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four but walked a season-high five - including four in a row in the fourth inning. Brent Leach pitched 2 1/3 strong innings with the only mistake coming on Floyd's second home run.
