Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, FL - The margin for error is shrinking for the Fort Myers Miracle after they lost 6-2 to the Sarasota Reds on Friday night at Hammond Stadium leaving their magic number to clinch the Western Division at two. The Tampa Yankees and Lakeland Tigers were rained out on Friday evening.

The Miracle haven't gotten many quality starts over the past week and nothing changed on Friday as Kyle Aselton couldn't get out of the second when the Reds exploded for five runs. Trevor Lawhorn led off with a single. Aselton then hit Hector Tiburcio. John Purdom reached on a fielders choice, erasing the middle runner and putting runners at the corners. A wild pitch allowed Lawhorn to score and Purdom to go to second which made it 1-0. Aselton issued back-to-back walks to Gary Patchett and Marland Williams loading the bases. Cody Strait followed with a bases clearing double making it 4-0. Two batters later Jay Garthwaite reached on an infield single and Jeremiah Piepkorn followed with one as well which scored Strait to make it 5-0. Aselton left after the final hit going 1.2 innings allowing five runs on five hits while walking two and striking out three.

The Miracle couldn't muster any offense against Russell Haltiwanger, who was just called up from Single-A Dayton. He allowed one run on one hit in his four innings of work, a solo homer by David Winfree to lead off the fourth, his 13th of the season.

The Reds made it 6-1 in the sixth on back-to-back one out walks to Patchett and Williams. Strait followed with an RBI single Strait was 3-5 with four RBI on the night.

The Miracle, who loaded the bases in the fifth with one out, but came up empty, nearly did the same in the eighth inning. Winfree led off with a single, advanced to second on a walk to Brock Peterson and the Miracle loaded the bases with a single to center by Jeremy Pickrel. The Miracle scored a run when Erold Andrus hit a grounder to first that Tonys Gutierrez couldn't handle and it allowed Winfree to score to make it 6-2. A strike out by Luke Hughes and a double play ground out by Steve Tolleson ended the threat.

The Miracle now head to Sarasota for a double header on Saturday beginning at 5:00 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Anthony Swarzak (10-7, 3.33) to the hill in game one and are TBA in game two. The Yankees and Tigers also play a double header beginning at 5:00 p.m. in Lakeland.
