
Miracle Have Four Players Named to FSL All-Star Classic

FORT MYERS, FL (June 1, 2006) - The Fort Myers Miracle have been at or near the top of the Florida State League's Western Division all season long. Their hard team work has been evident all season, but four individuals were recognized for their outstanding play with an All-Star selection. Two pitchers, Matt Garza and Kevin Slowey, infielder Alexi Casilla and catcher Kyle Geiger will play in Lakeland on Saturday, June 17 in the FSL All-Star Game.
The 22-year-old Garza will not participate in the game because he was called up to Double-A New Britain on May 15, but he was rewarded for an outstanding eight games pitched in the FSL. He went 5-1, 1.42. In 44.1 he allowed just seven earned runs on 27 hits while walking 11 and striking out 53 and opponents hit just .169 against him. Garza is still tied for third in wins and is tops in the league in ERA. Garza was a first round pick by the Twins in 2005 out of Fresno State University. He is currently 2-0, 2.04 in three games at Double-A New Britain. In 17.2 innings he has walked just three and struck out 27 while opponents are hitting .164 against him. It is his first All-Star selection.
The 22-year-old Slowey may have the most mind boggling numbers in the FSL. He is 2-1, 1.48 in 10 games. In 60.2 innings he has walked just six and struck out 75 while opponents are hitting just .165 against him. He is currently second in ERA, only behind former teammate Garza and second in strikeouts, just two behind the league leader. Slowey was a second round pick by the Twins in 2005 out of Winthrop University. It is his first All-Star selection
The 21-year-old Casilla has been a solid force at the top of the Miracle order hitting .308-0-19 in a team high 49 games. In 211 at bats Casilla has 10 doubles, four triples, while walking 12 times and striking out just 27 times. He is 17 out of 22 in stolen bases. He is currently third in the league in hits with 65 and fifth in stolen bases. He has played 29 games at second base and 20 games at shortstop and committed just 10 errors. The Twins acquired Casilla in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for reliever J.C. Romero on December 9, 2005. This is Casilla's first All-Star game.
The 24-year-old Geiger has handled the catching duties while filling in over at first base as well. Geiger is third among Western Division catchers with a .248 average. He has also driven in 12 runs in 37 games. In 133 at bats he has seven doubles, walked nine times and struck out just 21 times. He has spent 22 games behind the plate and 12 games at first and committed just five errors and thrown out 32% of would be base stealers. He was a 42nd round pick by the Twins in 2002. This is Geiger's first All-Star selection.
The All-Star Game will be at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland on Saturday, June 17 at 7:35 with the home run derby at 6:00 p.m. and gates opening at 5:00 p.m. Fans interested in attending the All-Star game can call the Miracle front office and acquire about the bus trip by calling 239-768-4210.
