Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
DAYTONA, FL (June 1, 2006) - The Fort Myers Miracle were so used to shutting out opponents that it must have felt odd to be on the other end of it on Thursday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark as their shutout streak ended at 36.2 innings as they lost 1-0 to the Daytona Cubs.
The Miracle, who dropped to 31-22, entered play having not allowed a run in 29 consecutive innings. With their ace Kevin Slowey on the mound it looked like it would continue and it did, but only for the time Slowey was in the game. He and Cubs starter Mark Holliman locked horns for seven innings, neither pitcher giving an inch.
Slowey, second in the league in ERA, looked like an All-Star, selected earlier in the day, by going 7.0 shutout innings allowing just five hits while striking out seven. He allowed just one man to second, giving up two singles in the third, but got a ground ball double play to end the inning as he extended the Miracle shutout streak to 36 innings. He retired the last nine men he faced, but as usual got no run support.
Holliman matched Slowey pitch for pitch. He went 7.0 innings allowing just three hits while walking two and striking out four. He got into two small jams. The Miracle had back-to-back singles from Kyle Geiger and Jeremy Pickrel in the second with one out, but Trevor Plouffe's sinking liner was caught by right fielder Ryan Harvey on a nice sliding grab. Luke Hughes ended the inning by flying out to center. In the fifth Pickrel led off with an infield single, stole second and after a walk to Korey Feiner the two moved up one base on a wild pitch. Alexi Casilla, however, grounded out to end the inning.
The shutout streak finally came to an end for the Miracle in the eighth. Alan Rick lined a lead off single to center off of reliever Jose Mijares. Danny Gonzalez sacrificed him to second and Mijares got Nate Spears on strikes. The Miracle elected to pitch to .350 hitter Sam Fuld and he lined the first pitch into left-center for a two run double and the shutout streak ended at 36.2 innings, the longest such streak in Miracle history.
The Miracle faced one of the best closers in the ninth, Adalberto Mendez, and Garrett Guzman led off with a single to left. Justin Arneson pinch ran for him and moved to second on a wild pitch. Brock Peterson struck out and Kyle Geiger moved him to third on a ground out, but Pickrel struck out to end the game.
The Miracle are now 1-8 at Jackie Robinson ballpark over the last three seasons and will try to win their 1000th game in Fort Myers franchise history on Friday. The same two teams meet Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send LHP Kyle Aselton (4-2, 4.10) to the hill against Cubs RHP Matt Weber (2-3, 7.51)
