Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Clearwater, FL) - After a 30-minute rain delay to start the night, the Vero Beach Dodgers cruised to a 5-1 victory over the Clearwater Threshers at Brighthouse Networks Field. Scott Elbert allowed only one run in six innings to even his record at 4-4. Blake DeWitt and Chris Westervelt each hit solo home runs to lead the offense. The series continues Friday at 7:05 PM when Jonathan Figueroa makes his first start of 2006.
Elbert bounced back from his roughest start of the year by setting down the first eight batters he faced Thursday night. The Threshers would manage only three singles against him. Elbert walked four but struck out seven to match his season best. Julio Pimentel dealt the final three innings for his second save.
DeWitt's first inning home run gave the Dodgers an early 1-0 lead. Vero added to it in the second when Cole Bruce doubled. It was his first at bat since being named to the Florida State League East Division All Star team. He would score on wild pitch for the team's second run. Two outs later David Nicholson added the first of his two doubles and scored when Xavier Paul rapped a two-base hit of his own.
Christ Westervelt pulled a homer down the left field line in the 4th to make it 4-0 before the Threshers got on the board. In the bottom of that inning Peeter Ramos and Mike Costanza drew back-to-back walks from Elbert. Branden Florence followed with a seeing-eye single between third and short to plate Ramos.
The Dodgers picked up an insurance run in the 9th and let Pimentel close it out. The former starter is 2-2 in save opportunities this year. He allowed just two hits in three innings and struck out four.
