Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL - The Fort Myers Miracle pitching staff had escaped them over the last four games giving up 55 hits during that span. Leave it to a 19-year-old to give the Miracle a shot in the arm as Jay Rainville helped lead the Miracle to a 4-3 victory over the Daytona Cubs Friday night at Hammond Stadium.
Rainville used an explosive fastball and good curve ball to keep the Cubs off balance all night. He went 6.2 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking one and striking out five. His offense got him all the runs they needed in the first two innings.
In the first Matt Tolbert led off with a single to left. Angelo Fermin's ground ball to short was booted by Carlos Rojas to put runners at first and second. One out later Brock Peterson hit the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for his ninth homer of the season and a 3-0 Miracle lead.
In the second the newest Miracle Luke Hughes singled to right in his first at bat in a Miracle jersey. Ron Perodin followed with a walk. With two outs Fermin singled to right that scored Hughes and gave the Miracle a 4-0 lead. From there the Miracle hung on.
The Cubs got a run in the third on a solo homer from Tony Richie, his fourth of the season. In the seventh, with one out, Jake Fox singled to second and advanced to second on a throwing error by Hughes. With two outs Tony Ritchie singled to right that made it 4-2 and forced Rainville out of the game. Jannio Gutierrez came in and got the final out of the inning.
Gutierrez worked the rest of the way. He gave up a solo homer to Paul O' Toole in the ninth to make it a one run game and then walked two straight with two out, but got Robinson Chirinos to fly out to left to end the game for his sixth save of the season. Gutierrez went 2.1 innings allowing one run on one hit while walking two and striking out two.
The same two teams meet Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Julio DePaula (2-3, 2.55) to the hill against Cubs LHP JR Mathes (8-5, 3.05).
