WEEK IN REVIEW FOR THE CARDINALS
Information provided by Tony Suarez, Media Relations for Palm Beach Cardinals
The Hammerheads snapped out of their five game losing streak in a big way, scoring 11 runs and beating the Palm Beach Cardinals 11-8. After anemic offensive performances in their last five games, Jupiter pounded out 12 hits on Friday night. After falling to an early 3-0 deficit, Jupiter's bats came alive with 2 outs in the bottom of the 3rd. Angel Molina, batting with the bases loaded, hit a bases clearing double to right. Molina now has 70 RBI on the season. Ryan Bear and Kevin Randel followed with back-to back doubles, giving Jupiter a total of 5 runs in the inning. Palm Beach got one back on a homer from Joe Mather in the 4th off Paul Mildren, who was scheduled to start, but came in to begin the 2nd after Antonio Alfonseca threw one inning of rehab. Alfonseca threw 15 pitches, 10 for strikes. He allowed 2 hits, including a home run to Reid Gorecki. Mildren pitched innings 2 through 6 and received a no decision, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits. Palm Beach took the lead back in the top of the 8th, scoring 2 runs off Hammerheads reliever Patrick Flury. Down 6-5, Juipter came roaring back in the bottom of the 8th. They batted around against Cardinal relievers Rich Scalamandre and Andy Cavazos, scoring 6 runs and sending 10 men to the plate. Carlos Martinez got the win for the Hammerhaeds, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits. Scalamandre took the loss for the Cardinals, allowing 4 runs in two-thirds of an inning of work.
Brian Martin had two home runs and 5 RBI for the Palm Beach Cardinals, lifting them past the Jupiter Hammerheads 6-1. Mike Parisi got the win and threw 8 shutout innings for the redbirds, allowing only 4 hits while striking out 8. Jupiter starter Allen Baxter gave up 3 straight singles to start the game, followed by a grand slam homer to left from Martin. Palm Beach would add another run that inning on an RBI double from catcher Brandon Marcelli. Baxter went 4 innings and allowed 5 runs on 7 hits. The Hammerheads' lone run came in the 9th. Juan Figueroa led off with a triple to center, and scored on an RBI grounder from Angel Molina. Molina is now tied for the league lead in RBI with 71. Antonio Alfonseca made another rehab appearance with the Hammerheads. Alfonseca pitched the 8th inning for Jupiter and threw 15 pitches, 10 for strikes. He struck out two and did not allow a hit.
Eric Haberer's seven-inning complete game put the finishing touch on the Cardinals' sweep of a doubleheader against the Sarasota Reds on Monday night. Haberer allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out five, as he recorded a win for his third consecutive start. The Reds scored twice in the second inning on three straight singles, but Haberer was able to settle down after that. The Cardinals answered back with one in the bottom of the second on a home run by Joe Mather, his seventh of the year. In the third, the Cardinals tied the game as Brian Martin hit into a double play with the bases loaded. In the fifth, the Cardinals scored two runs to put the game away off reliever Eric Lohse. With two outs, Andy Schutzenhofer was hit by a pitch. Reid Gorecki and Martin followed with doubles to plate the third and fourth runs. In game one of the doubleheader, the Reds also jumped out to an early lead by scoring one run in the first. The Cardinals tied the score in the bottom of the first, and then took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth - again with a two-out rally. Mike McCoy walked and stole second base. Schutzenhofer singled to score McCoy, advanced to second on a throwing error, and scored on a double by Martin. Roberto Batista picked up the win in relief of Mark Michael, who threw just two innings. It was Michael's first start since coming off the disabled list late last week.
Ben Himes went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Joey Votto went 4-for-5 as the Sarasota Reds snapped the Cardinals' three-game winning streak on Tuesday night. With the Reds leading 2-0, the Cardinals were able to tie things with a run in the third and a run in the fourth. Reid Gorecki singled home Rayner Laya in the third inning to make it 2-1, and in the fourth, Jarrett Hoffpauir singled home Joe Mather to tie the game. That would be all the Cardinals would get off Reds' pitching. Jim Paduch made the start for Sarasota and worked four innings, before being relieved by Brad Morenko who earned the win four shutout innings. Cardinals' starter Dennis Dove allowed four runs (three earned) over five innings. Oscar Alvarez, making his first appearance with Palm Beach after being added to the roster from Springfield, allowed two runs and four hits in three innings, but also struck out four. Reid Gorecki finished 3-for-4 for the Cards, and Rayner Laya added two hits.
Mike McCoy went 2-for-5 with four RBI and Jose Garcia allowed just one run over six innings as the Cardinals won the four-game series from the Sarasota Reds with a 10-1 victory on Wednesday morning. D.J. Mattox (3-6) had allowed just two hits into the sixth inning, but the Cardinals mounted a rally in the sixth and scored six times on six hits. The inning was highlighted by a triple by Mike McCoy that scored Brian Martin and Joe Mather and a double by Jarrett Hoffpauir to score Brady Toops and Rayner Laya. The Cardinals added another run in the seventh to make it 7-1 and scored three times in the eighth to score in double digits for the fifth time this season. The Cardinals also batted around twice in the game - in the sixth and the eighth. In total, the Cardinals' offense pounded out 15 hits, including two apiece by Andy Schutzenhofer, Reid Gorecki, Hoffpauir, Martin, and McCoy. Joe Mather added three hits for Palm Beach. Garcia (5-4) gave up just a lone run in the first on a single by Joey Votto, and just three hits overall. Justin Garza tossed two perfect innings in relief, and Rich Scalamandre pitched a perfect ninth.
The Cardinals rallied from an early five-run deficit to take the lead on Thursday night against the Clearwater Threshers, but the bullpen surrendered it back in the eighth and the Cardinals fell 11-9. The Threshers scored early and often off Cardinals' starter Mike Parisi. Bryan Hanson led off the second inning with a single, which was followed by a home run by Brad Correll to give Clearwater the early 2-0 lead. After the Threshers scored three more times in the inning, the score was 5-0. The runs snapped Parisi's scoreless inning streak at 15. The Cardinals trailed 6-1 heading into the fourth inning, but scored four times to make it 6-5. Matt Dryer led off with a home run, his 14th of the season. Rayner Laya (pictured) later doubled in the inning to score Joe Mather for the second run. Andy Schutzenhofer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Reid Gorecki drove home a run with a sacrifice fly to cap the inning. Clearwater was held in check by Roberto Batista in the middle innings. After Parisi was lifted at the end of the third, Batista threw four scoreless innings, allowing the Cardinals a chance to come back and take the lead in the seventh. The Cardinals scored three times in the seventh with the benefit of only one hit - a double by Joe Mather. After leadoff walks to Gorecki and Brian Martin, catcher Jose Cortez threw the ball into centerfield on a pick-off attempt, enabling Gorecki and Martin to advance a base. Clearwater reliever Juan Carlos Alvarez then balked, scoring Gorecki. After the double by Mather to score Martin, the Cardinals added a third run on a fielder's choice hit by Laya. With an 8-6 lead heading into the eighth, Cardinals' reliever Chris Russ (0-2) was unable to hold down the Clearwater attack. The Threshers scored five runs in the inning for the second time of the night, highlighted by a two-run double by Tim Moss. Martin homered in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Kyle Parcus (1-2) to make the score 11-9, but the Cardinals left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, with the game ending on a diving stop by Moss to throw out Schutzenhofer in the hole between first and second.
