Minnesota United FC vs. New York City FC Preview

May 27, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Minnesota United FC News Release

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - In their third Wednesday night match this month, the Loons faced the Owls of Union Omaha in yet another battle of the birds for the right to move to the next round of the U.S. Open Cup. MNUFC dominated the possession game with 73% and a multitude of close goal-scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, only one shot from Adrien Hunou made it to the back of the net for the home side and Omaha secured a tight 2-1 win. The Loons will be back at Allianz Field before you can say baconeggandcheese and they are ready for redemption. Facing off against the reigning MLS Cup Champions is a good way to be redeemed. To date, the two teams have met a total of three times, which they have split points evenly with a record of 1-1-1. It has been a busy month for the boys in Black and Blue, but if they can secure one last win before the international break, they will have the chance to climb the ranks in the tightly contested Western Conference.

ADRIAN HEATH ON PREPARING FOR NYCFC

"They're difficult to play against for sure. That front four are as good as anybody in the league depending who they play even. In [Maximiliano] Moralez, they've got one of the best players in the league. I love watching him play. [Valentin] Castellanos has been arguably the best striker in the league. They've got the young kid, Santiago Rodriguez. They've got the kid, [Talles] Magno. They've spent a lot of money on that front four, whichever ones they play. We know that it's going to be a difficult task. I have no doubt that Ronny's [Ronny Deila] watched us and know that we play really well at home. And if we can play as well as we have been, certainly like we did against the Galaxy, then we'll be able to cause them trouble."

BRENT KALLMAN ON FINDING CONSISTENCY GAME TO GAME

"We've got to try and take the good from a couple of those performances and they're different, right? Against the Galaxy, we were a lot better with the ball, creating things, more dangerous going forward. If we can take some of that and then we can take from the Dallas game on the road, we were together. Really good shape. Difficult to break down and a really good defensive attitude. We can kind of take a little bit from each of those things on both sides of the ball and bring that into Saturday, it will do really well for us."

STORYLINES PRESENTED BY BMW

THE PERFECT GAME: For all their above-described dominance, City's offense actually hasn't been that free-flowing. In their last three games (the U.S. Open Cup game against New England, plus league games against DC United and Chicago), New York's goals have come from the following sources: header from a corner kick, penalty drawn from a handball during a corner kick, penalty drawn from a handball during a corner kick, turnover in the final third. That's correct: New York has scored just one goal from open play of their last four, and that (the extra-time winner against New England) was created by a fortunate set of circumstances. City dominated each of these games by xG, but should Minnesota be able to avoid critical mistakes, they have not been rampant recently. [READ MORE]
