Minnesota Lynx Claim Crystal Smith Off Waivers, Re-Sign Veteran Forward Tiffany Stansbury

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx announced today that they have claimed point guard Crystal Smith off of waivers from the Houston Comets and re-signed veteran forward Tiffany Stansbury. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

To make room on the training camp roster, the Lynx also waived center Marita Payne and guards Megan Vogel, Ashley Awkward, and Caroline Williams. Minnesota's roster now stands at 18, with five of those players still out of the country fulfilling their overseas commitments.

Smith, a 5-foot-5 point guard, spent the 2007 season with the Comets, appearing in 27 games with 23 starts. She averaged 6.3 points, 2.7 assists, and 2.0 rebounds per game while averaging 25.3 minutes per game. As a rookie in 2006, she averaged 2.7 points in 22 games with the Phoenix Mercury.

Stansbury played in 30 games with the Lynx in 2007 with 14 starts. She averaged 4.3 points and 4.3 rebounds. She originally signed with the Lynx on May 25, 2007, after spending the 2006 season with the Los Angeles Sparks.

Vogel, a 5-foot-11 graduate of South Dakota State, started all 120 of her team's games over her four-year career and finished second on the school's scoring charts with 1,850 points.

Williams, a 2007 graduate of Vanderbilt, finished her collegiate career with the Vanderbilt and Southeastern Conference record for career 3-point shooting percentage, making 46.5 percent of her 512 long-range attempts. Awkward, a 2007 graduate of Ole Miss, closed out her final season ranked second on the team in scoring (12.9), assists (2.7) and steals (1.9).

Payne, a 6-5 center and 2006 graduate of Auburn University, averaged 7.2 points and 5.6 rebounds and totaled a school-record 377 blocks during four seasons. The Australia native averaged 7.9 points and 6.5 rebounds as a senior. In her junior season (2004-05), Payne led the nation with 141 blocks.
