June 29, 2019 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Sussex County Miners News Release
In a thrilling game on Ladies Night at Skylands Stadium, the Sussex County Miners sent the crowd home happy with a 11-inning, 3-2 walk-off win against the Rockland Boulders.
The Boulders took the lead in the second inning when Matt Oberste hit a line drive base hit to right field. Then Collin Ferguson hit a double deep out to right-center field an RBI as Oberste ran across home plate, making the score 1-0 going into the bottom of the second.
The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth inning turned into the battle of the defensive plays as neither team were able to score. However, the Miners during this time span were able to complete two double plays. The first one, in the fourth inning, was started by Jarred Mederos. The next one followed in the fifth inning, which was started by Cito Culver.
It wasn't until the seventh inning stretch that the Miners were finally able to pull ahead. Jose Brizuela hit the ball down the third base line for a double. Soon after, Brandon Downes hit his own double out to left-center field, scoring Brizuela to tie the game at one. A line drive by pinch hitter Nick Zaharion brought Downes home, making the score 2-1 Miners as they went into the top of the eighth with the lead.
The Boulders would tie things up in the top of ninth as Grant Heyman hit a full count pitch for a solo home run to right field. With the Miners unable to plate any more runs, the game would have to go into extra innings.
In the top of tenth, Chase Harris sacrificed as Richie Fecteau advanced to third. Then Ryne Birk hit a line drive right at Culver, and the shortstop fielded and turned a double play to Mederos to end the Boulders tenth. The Miners also were unable to push any runs across, keeping the score tied up 2-2 as they advanced into the top of the eleventh.
James Campbell would load the bases but then get two strikeouts and then a fly out to Noah Cummings to retire the side. Then in the bottom of the eleventh, Jarred Mederos would end the game, hitting a drive to right center field and scoring Audy Ciriaco.
The Miners and Boulders will conclude their three-game series at Palisades Credit Union Park, with 6:00pm start time between the two teams. Miners fans can hear the game on the Miners Radio Network.
