
Miners Take Down Boulders

Rockland County, NY - Martin Figueroa had five hits and five RBI, while Nilo Rijo also had four hits and knocked in three runs as the visiting Sussex County downed the New York Boulders, 12-5, on Monday at Clover Stadium in Pomona.
Figueroa had run-scoring singles in the third, fourth and seventh innings, an RBI double in the sixth and capped off his night with a solo home run, his seventh of the season, in the ninth; while Rijo knocked in two runs with a fourth inning single and one with a double in the sixth.
Rijo and Figueroa, the top two hitters in the Sussex County line-up, combined for nine hits and eight RBI.
In all, the Miners pounded out 17 hits, breaking open the game with four runs in the fourth and sixth innings as they turned a 1-0 lead through three frames into a commanding 9-4 advantage.
The Boulders trailed 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth when they erupted for four runs to get back in the game. With two outs, Giovanni Garbella doubled before Francisco Del Valle knocked him in with a single. Gian Martellini followed with a two-run home run, his fifth of the season to make it a 5-3 game.
Chris Kwitzer doubled and Gabriel Garcia singled to cut the New York deficit to 5-4.
Miners' starter Michael Mediavilla, though, settled down and struck out Max Smith to end the inning.
Del Valle also knocked in an eighth inning run for the Boulders with a groundout.
Mediavilla went seven innings to get the win. He allowed seven hits and four runs, while striking out 10 and walking one. Mediavilla improved to 4-2 with the victory.
Andy Hammond started and was tagged with the loss for the Boulders, falling to 3-2 on the year.
