Boomers Sweep Y'alls to Conclude Winless Road Trip
July 4, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL - A grand slam in the fourth inning gave Schaumburg an early lead, and late scoring provided the Boomers with some breathing room as they wrapped up a 6-3 victory at Wintrust Field Monday night.
All seven games on the road trip for Florence (17-27) were one-run games at one point, and five of them ended as one-run defeats. After winning five consecutive series, the Y'alls have now lost seven games in a row and are 5-16 on the road overall this season. Florence has been swept on the road four times.
In his first game as a Boomer, Mike Hart hit a grand slam off of Jonaiker Villalobos to stake Boomers' early 4-0 lead. The Y'alls would chip away and get within a 4-3 score thanks to single runs in the third, fifth, and seventh innings, respectively. Alberti Chavez accounted for two of those runs batted in with a fielder's choice ground out and a RBI double. In the seventh, Bryant Flete drove in Ray Zuberer with a single to make it another one-run game.
The Boomers (23-21) added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth with three consecutive doubles to plate two runs. William Salas and Hart had the run-scoring hits, giving Hart two hits and five RBI in his Schaumburg debut. Darrell Thompson struck out five of the six batters he faced to earn the six out save, his second save of the series. Schaumburg has won seven in a row and eight of the past nine games overall.
Blake Stelzer gets the win for the Boomers, allowing just two earned runs in six innings with seven strikeouts along the way. Villalobos takes the loss, although the four runs he allowed came on that one swing of the bat. Four of his five innings were scoreless, getting some help from Cameron Pferrer in the sixth when the righty stranded two inherited runners allowed by Villalobos.
Despite the winless road trip, the Y'alls had some standout performers. Harrison DiNicola extended his hitting streak to nine games. Axel Johnson went 8-22 (.363) with two home runs and seven RBI. Ray Zuberer had three hits tonight and eight overall, five of which were doubles.
The Y'alls try to right the ship with a brief three-game series against Lake Erie starting tomorrow, Tuesday, July 5. Jake McMahill gets the start for Florence for the 6:32 PM EDT first pitch. It's a $2 Tuesday, meaning game tickets, soda, popcorn, ice cream, and Twisted Tea drafts are all just $2 each.
