Grizzlies Swept at Home

Gateway Grizzlies News Release

Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies again lost to the Evansville Otters at home on Monday evening by a score of 6-1, dropping all four games of their holiday weekend series.

For the second time in the series, it was Gateway grabbing the lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a Trevor Achenbach RBI fielder's choice. J.P. Williams (2-4) then took that lead and ran with it, striking out six and firing five shutout innings to keep it 1-0.

But the rookie gave up a game-tying solo homer with two strikes to Zach Biermann to make it 1-1, and departed after walking Steven Sensley with one out. After a ground ball to third base induced by Nick Kennedy, he hit rookie Anthony Torreullas with a pitch on an 0-2 count, and George Callil hit a go-ahead, three-run home run to left-center field to put the Otters in front to stay. Callil would add yet another home run, a two-run shot, to complete the scoring in the top of the eighth.

Achenbach would pick up another RBI on a single in the ninth for the final margin, but it was not enough, as the Grizzlies stranded 11 runners on base and went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position to take their eighth straight loss against the Otters.

Gateway will look to turn things around on the road, heading to Joliet for the start of a six-game road trip on Tuesday, July 5, at 6:35 p.m. Brendan Feldmann will start for the Grizzlies in the opener against the Slammers' Trevor Charpie.
