Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners gave up four runs in the bottom of the first inning, and despite rallying for three runs of their own in the second, were unable to come back in a 6-3 loss to the Windy City ThunderBolts on Thursday night.
For the second straight night, the home team scored multiple runs in the first inning, this time plating four runs with two outs off Gunnar Kines (1-3) on a single by Rob Weissheier and a bases-clearing triple by Jack Strunc to take a 4-0 lead in the game.
Southern Illinois played long ball to nearly come all the way back in the second inning. Ian Walters smashed his first professional home run off the video board in right-center field to make it 3-1, and after a Luke Mangieri triple two batters later, Anthony Brocato crushed a two-run shot to center field, making the score 4-3. The Miners also got the tying run on base against ThunderBolts starter Logan Wiley (1-1) in the fourth inning on a double by Nolan Earley with one out, but stranded him at third base.
Windy City then added two their lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings, aided by a pair of Miners errors, to make the score 6-3. The Miners were then able to hold the line on the mound, with Kines settling in to pitch five innings, and Mitchell Walters and Blake Stelzer combining for three more scoreless innings in relief. But the ThunderBolts also kept the Miners off the board themselves to secure the series win.
Southern Illinois will continue their road trip on Friday, July 16, at Bosse Field against the Evansville Otters, with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. Chase Cunningham will draw the starting assignment for the Miners against the Otters' Austin Gossmann.
