Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners lost their third straight game when a passed ball with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning led to the winning run in a 5-4 loss to the Florence Y'alls.
Andres Rios opened the scoring with a solo home run leading off the bottom of the third against Jake Fisher, and Florence would plate another run later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Luis Pintor to make it 2-0. The Miners would respond right away in the top of the fourth- Nolan Earley led off with a single and Ariel Sandoval doubled to right-center field before Jamey Smart knocked an RBI single into left field to make it 2-1 Florence. A subsequent error on the same play by Y'alls left fielder Axel Johnson brought Sandoval home from third base and tied the score at 2-2.
That held until the bottom of the fifth, when Florence would take the lead on a two-out, full-count, two-run homer by Pintor at 4-2, giving the Y'alls shortstop seven RBIs in the series. But yet again, the Miners responded right away to tie the score when with runners on first and second base and two outs in the top of the sixth, Jared Mang came up clutch with a double, plating both Smart and Ian Walters to make the score 4-4.
In the bottom of the inning, Kenny Pierson (0-1) allowed a leadoff single to Harrison DiNicola, then recorded the first two outs of the inning on ground balls which advanced the runner to second, then third base. Blake Stelzer came on to pitch, and on his second strike to Rios, the batter swung with no contact made, with the ball getting off the glove of Cody Erickson for a passed ball to bring in DiNicola for a 5-4 lead.
Southern Illinois would then get the tying run on base in each of their final three turns at-bat, but would strand that runner each time, including on third base in the eighth, to drop to 0-5 at Y'alls Ballpark this season, with four of the defeats decided by one run.
The Miners offensively enjoyed their second-straight double-digit hit game in the series, with 13 as a unit. Bryant Flete and Sandoval led the way with three hits apiece, while Smart and Yeltsin Gudiño added two each, but it was not enough.
Southern Illinois will look to avoid a series sweep at Y'alls Ballpark in the finale on Sunday, August 29, at 1:59 p.m. CDT.
