Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners got a solid start by rookie right-hander Trent Johnson in his professional debut, but could not get their offense going in suffering a 6-1 loss against the Florence Y'Alls on Saturday at Rent One Park.
Johnson (0-1) gave up both of the runs against him in the first inning. With two outs and two strikes on Harrison DiNicola and runners at second and third base, a high-bouncing, infield hit scored both runners and made it 2-0. Johnson would allow just two baserunners after that inning, lasting through the fifth in his first professional start, and picking up three strikeouts against one walk to keep the Florence offense at bay.
The Miners were able to get within 2-1 in the fourth on a double by Luke Mangieri and a single by Ian Walters, but would manage nothing more on the board against Florence starter Kevin Hahn (1-0), who ended up tossing eight innings of one-run ball to get the victory. Southern Illinois' bullpen faltered in the late innings, as Florence plated one run in the sixth and three more in the eighth for the final margin.
Southern Illinois will send Zac Westcott to the hill on Sunday as they look to avoid a sweep at the hands of their West Division rivals, with Florence countering with Edgar Martinez at 5:05 p.m. in Marion.
