LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Grasshoppers gave up five runs in the second inning as the BlueClaws pulled out a 6-2 win over visiting Greensboro on Tuesday at FirstEnergy Park. Lakewood sent 10 players to bat in the big inning, scoring five runs on seven hits while Greensboro starting pitcher Sean Guenther attempted to weather the storm.
BlueClaws starter Julian Garcia (4-2) earned the win, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings and working around three hits and a walk while striking out eight. Guenther (2-1) took the loss, giving up six runs (five earned) on 10 hits over 4.0 frames in his second start with Greensboro this season.
Brandon Miller, who recently moved from the Grasshoppers rotation into the bullpen, tossed 4.0 scoreless innings in relief. The right-hander struck out two and walked none while working around one hit to finisht the game on the mound for Greensboro (48-52).
In the bottom of the second, Matt Vierling, Daniel Brito, and Quincy Nieporte strung together three straight 1-out singles, and Colby Fitch followed with a 2-run triple for a 3-0 lead. Dalton Guthrie, Simon Muzziotti, and Jake Scheiner then added a parade of three straight 2-out hits to built the BlueClaws lead to 5-0.
Down 6-0, the Hoppers put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the sixth off reliever Tyler Fallwell. Tristan Pompey singled to cash Thomas Jones, and Will Allen added an RBI-out, scoring Jose Devers, but Greensboro could not close the gap beyond that.
The Grasshoppers are back at it on Wednesday morning at 11:05 a.m. against the BlueClaws at FirstEnergy Park. Greensboro returns home on Friday for a 3-game series against Hickory, and tickets are available online at gsohoppers.com.
