Miller Matches Career-High 7.0 IP in Loss

LAKEWOOD, N.J. -- Grasshoppers starting pitcher Brandon Miller worked 7.0 innings, matching the longest outings of his career, but Greensboro's offense sputtered in a 5-1 loss to the Lakewood BlueClaws on Tuesday at First National Bank Field. The game also saw Jose Devers' season-best 11-game hitting streak come to an end with an 0-for-4 night.

Miller (1-4) allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out a season-high eight batter, one shy of his career-best, and walking none. Errors in the third and fifth inning -- including a missed catch error by Miller in the fifth -- allowed an unearned run in each frame to boost the BlueClaws. Miller also allowed two home runs to begin innings as Rodolfo Duran led off the third with a blast, and Quincy Nieporte followed suit in the sixth.

Greensboro (23-26) led 1-0 in the second inning after Jhonny Santos belted a solo home run (4) with one out in the frame. Lakewood responded with two runs in the third and continued to add single tallies fifth, sixth, and eighth innings to pull away.

Ramon Rosso (2-1) earned the win, working 6.0 innings and allowing a run on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Luis Carrasco spun the final 3.0 innings for the save (1), keeping the Grasshoppers off the board during his outing.

Offensively, Lazaro Alonso paced Greensboro with two hits, going 2-for-3, while the Santos home run served as the Hoppers lone extra-base hit. Jose Devers, who entered the game on an 11-game hitting streak dating back to May 19, finished hitless, snapping both his hitting streak as well as his 15-game on-base streak. Devers began the day with the third-longest active hitting streak in the South Atlantic League.

The Grasshoppers have an early morning on Wednesday as they face the BlueClaws at 11:05 a.m. at FirstEnergy Park in Game 2 of this 3-game series. The team returns home on Friday to begin a 3-game home stand against the West Virginia Power, and tickets are available online at gsohoppers.com.
