Calgary Vipers News Release
Trailing 3-0, the Calgary Vipers used two home runs from Drew Miller to defeat the Victoria Seals 6-3 in the first half of a double-header featuring two seven inning games at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, British Columbia. In the sixth inning Miller went deep to tie the game and his teammates followed by scoring two more runs for a four run frame and the lead for good. With the victory the Vipers improve to 19-7 on the Golden Baseball League season and move to within one game of the Chico Outlaws for first place in the North Division.
Miller ended the night with the two big flies, three hits in total, three runs batted in, and two runs scored.
On the mound Berek Fasking (2-2) picked up the victory by throwing a scoreless inning out of the bullpen while Claudio Galva (6) recorded the save to tie for the league lead by tossing the final two innings and striking out three.
Victoria scored first in the bottom of the second inning when Brian Rios and Josh Arhart singled, moved up a base each on a throwing error, and Shane Cronin plated an unearned run with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
The Seals doubled their lead to 2-0 in the third frame as Dale Swinford singled and scored on a Matt Kavanaugh run batted in double.
For a third straight inning Victoria got a single run when in the fourth Rios singled and scored on an Arhart double for a 3-0 advantage.
Calgary got a run back in the next half inning for a 3-1 score as Jonny Kaplan, Caonabo Cosme, and Matt Edgecombe wrapped three straight singles together. For Edgecombe it was a pinch-hit base hit off the bench for a RBI.
The Vipers rallied in the top of the sixth when Julio Ramirez was hit by a pitch and Drew Miller hit his sixth home run of the season to tie the game. Later in the inning Kaplan singled, Cosme walked, pinch-hitting Luis Taveras also walked on a terrific ten pitch at-bat to load the bases, and both Guillermo Reyes and Brent Metheny recorded RBI singles for a 5-3 lead.
Victoria got a run back in the bottom of the frame on a Rios solo home run for a 5-4 score.
In the top of the seventh inning Miller launched a solo home run to tie him for the team lead with seven dingers and give Calgary a 6-4 advantage.
