Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, IA- Last Friday's Military Appreciation Night presented by Kwik Stop and Dairy Queen and media partner 101.1 The River was a resounding success, and set a jersey auction record. The Fighting Saints honored the military on Friday by wearing special stars and stripes jerseys that were auctioned off after the game. Those jerseys, combined with a special framed team-autographed jersey donated by Kwik Stop and Dairy Queen, brought in nearly $20,000 for the Veterans Freedom Center.

The total raised from the 23 jerseys auctioned off was $18,350, the highest total for any Fighting Saints jersey auction over the past four seasons. Forward Seamus Malone's jersey went for an auction high of $1,200, while captain Alexx Privitera, and defenseman Keegan Ford also earned bids over $1,000 for their jerseys. The Dubuque County Veterans Affairs Commission helped sponsor the jerseys.

"The uniforms were a big hit with our players and coaches, and it's no surprise that Fighting Saints fans were eager to get their hands on these great jerseys to show support for our Veterans and active military members," said Fighting Saints President Dan Lehv.

The patriotic-themed jerseys worn Friday were red, white, and blue in color and featured the Fighting Saints "D-Logo" on the front, dressed in stars and stripes. The shoulders of the uniform also featured stars and stripes, and each sleeve of the uniforms featured the phrase, "Home of the Brave." Each Fighting Saints player chose a special word for the back of their jersey that they associated with the military. Words featured on the jerseys included, "honor," "sacrifice," "valor," "freedom," and "glory."

Additionally, Kwik Stop and Dairy Queen auctioned off a framed, autographed jersey from the team's trip to the 2013 Junior Club World Cup in Omsk, Russia where the Fighting Saints represented the United States. This raised an additional $1,000 for the Veterans Freedom Center, bringing the total amount raised at Military Appreciation Night to $19,350. The game featured a 6-4 Fighting Saints victory in front of a season-high 2,894 fans.

Proceeds from the jersey auction will be donated to the Veterans Freedom Center located at 2245 Kerper Blvd. The Veterans Freedom Center opened in 2011 and serves the needs of all military active duty, reserve and Honorably Discharged Tri-State military veterans past and present. They offer a place for fellow veterans to interact, network together and provide the camaraderie that all shared while proudly serving their country.

Additional festivities at Friday's Military Appreciation Night included a pre-game remembrance ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Plaza located across the street from the Mystique Community Ice Center prior to the game. Fans joined Fighting Saints players and coaches for the ceremony, which included a moment of silence and a tribute played on bagpipes. The Fighting Saints also held a US Army Oath of Enlistment on the ice during the second intermission for ten new soldiers.

The Fighting Saints are back in action this Friday night as they host the Des Moines Buccaneers at 7:35 p.m. The Fighting Saints will support Movember and celebrate great facial hair at Friday evening's game as part of "Mustache Mania." Tickets are on-sale by calling 563.583.6880 or online at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
