Milano Marvelous in 4-2 Monsters Win
March 24, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - One evening prior to his bobblehead night at The Q, rookie forward Sonny Milano provided a pair of goals and the game-winning goal for Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters as they defeated the Rockford IceHogs by a 4-2 final score. With the win, the Monsters improved to 35-21-5-5 overall this season and with a .606 points percentage, remain alone in fourth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
The Monsters claimed a 1-0 lead just eight seconds into the opening period on Thursday, as Lukas Sedlak poked home one of the fastest goals in Monsters franchise history to start a game, an even-strength score assisted by Josh Anderson and Dillon Heatherington. Rockford tied things shortly thereafter, as Jonathan Carlsson leveled the score at one apiece with a five-on-five marker at 1:17.
In the second, Lake Erie surged to a 2-1 lead thanks to some dazzling stickhandling from Markus Hannikainen at 12:43 that resulted in the Finland native's seventh goal of the season, an even-strength tally assisted by Anderson and Trent Vogelhuber. Not to be outdone, Milano knifed through the IceHogs' defense at 16:47 and roofed an even-strength wrister, on feeds from Vogelhuber and Jaime Sifers, that gave Lake Erie a 3-1 advantage heading into the final period. Milano scored again at 12:00 of the third on a crisp passing play from Kerby Rychel and T.J. Tynan to make it 4-1, and after a Jake Dowell marker for Rockford at 19:17, the Monsters skated away 4-2 winners.
Mac Carruth stopped 31 of the 35 pucks he faced in defeat for the IceHogs, while Anton Forsberg improved to 19-10-4 in net for Lake Erie by virtue of a 23-save performance.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Friday rematch vs. Rockford with full coverage, live from The Q, underway at 7:00 pm on ESPN 850 WKNR and simulcast on Fox Sports Ohio and the Monsters Hockey Network.
