Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Ben Hornbeck recovered from a rocky start to earn his first victory and Steve Kleen's four hits paced the offense as Midland dumped Corpus Christi 5-3 Thursday night before 6,457.

The RockHounds, who left town with three wins in four games, improved to 11-9. The Hooks dropped to 9-11 and have lost nine of their last 12.

The Hooks mounted a one-out bases-loaded threat in the eighth, but Justin Souza fanned David Cook and popped up Jimmy Van Ostrand to first baseman Kleen in foul territory.

Midland wasted no time providing Hornbeck with a two-run lead. Yung-Chi Chen reached on an error when right fielder Cook dislodged his fly ball from the glove of center fielder T.J. Steele. Alex Valdez then doubled to left-center, placing runners at second and third for Shane Peterson, who produced a sacrifice liner to left. Archie Gilbert's single made it 2-0.

Corpus Christi countered with its first four runners reaching, three via bases on balls from Hornbeck. Koby Clemens walked with the bags loaded, German Duran lofted a sacrifice fly to center and Cook hit into a fielder's choice RBI as the Hooks moved up 3-2.

Singles by Kleen and Jermaine Mitchell and a throwing error by Hooks starter Sergio Perez enabled the RockHounds to tie the contest at 3 in the second.

Hornbeck (1-1) settled in after the first for four shutout frames, leaving with three hits, four walks and two strikeouts. Just 44 of his 84 pitches found the strike zone.

Beau Vaughan, the last of five Midland pitchers, notched his fifth save in five opportunities. Daniel Sattler, Derrick Gordon, Souza and Vaughan teamed for four shutout innings.

Perez (2-1) came undone in the sixth as Midland rallied for a pair on three hits and another errant pickoff attempt. Kleen contributed an RBI double, Mitchell a run-scoring single.

Gilbert and Mitchell had two hits each.

Left-hander Douglas Arguello (2-1) takes the mound at 7:05 Friday against Frisco's Tanner Roark (2-1) in the first of four between Hooks and RoughRiders. Bud Light sponsors postgame fireworks.
