Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Yesterday, Corpus Christi's Miracle League broke ground on a new facility designed to meet the needs of developmentally disabled children and young adults who dream of playing baseball.
Now, Stripes and the Corpus Christi Hooks are parlaying the first match involving an MLS team south of San Antonio into a soccer "Field of Dreams" in the Coastal Bend. In addition to Stripes serving as a sponsor for the Houston Dynamo-Laredo Heat exhibition at Whataburger Field on Thursday, June 10, Stripes will work with the Hooks to create a Field of Dreams at an area youth soccer field.
Youth soccer organizations can apply for field renovation/renewal beginning tonight at Whataburger Field, where the Hooks play host to Midland at 7:05 p.m. Applications are also available online at www.cchooks.com.
The TifSport Bermuda 419 sod used to cover infield dirt and baselines during the June 10 Dynamo-Heat soccer match will be transported to and transplanted at an area youth soccer field as Whataburger Field reverts to a baseball diamond.
"Field of Dreams has been a big initiative for us on the baseball side since 2006," Ryan-Sanders Baseball Founder and CEO Reid Ryan said. "Our grounds crew, with the help of maintenance and equipment vendors, first renovated Robstown Little League's Field. We recently completed a three-year push for the new Miracle League Field on Airport Road. Now, we have a unique opportunity to do something for soccer.
"It all comes down to doing what we can to enhance the quality of life in Corpus Christi and the surrounding area."
The deadline for applications is Thursday, May 13. Less than a month from that date, the successful applicant will have approximately 10,000 square feet of sod delivered to their youth soccer field or complex.
"Stripes' sponsorship of the Dynamo-Heat game gives us a great way to connect with a group of avid soccer fans on the eve of the start of World Cup 2010. This Field of Dreams soccer program seemed like the natural way for Stripes to continue its focus on making the community a better place to live - this time, one soccer field at a time," said Steve DeSutter, Stripes president and CEO.
Stripes and the Hooks will announce three field makeover finalists on Thursday, May 27. Then the winning organization will be announced at halftime of the June 10 Dynamo-Heat soccer match.
Beyond the Field of Dreams halftime announcement, Stripes' will be onsite at the Dynamo-Heat exhibition game with coupons and conducting a sweepstakes throughout the game via social media.
Stripes and the Hooks have been partners since Whataburger Field opened in 2005. The Stripes Diamond is a regulation youth baseball field located just beyond the batter's eye in center field. Local and regional teams compete on the field before Hooks games each evening. In 2009, 70 teams from 15 different leagues utilized the facility. Coastal Bend teams with players 12-and-under are eligible at no cost.
Since 2006, 332 teams have enjoyed the use of Stripes Diamond.
