Midland stays one step ahead of Round Rock
May 26, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
For the first half of Monday's game, the Round Rock Express and Midland RockHounds exchanged shots. As the middle innings wore on, though, Midland got an inch on Round Rock that turned into a mile. The RockHounds scored in five consecutive innings to eek out a 6-4 win in front of 9,291 at The Dell Diamond. The loss breaks a four-game Round Rock winning streak against Midland.
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the RockHounds got to work. Dan Johnson, the Texas League's home run and RBI leader, launched his 13th homer of the season in the third to give Midland a 3-1 lead.
Midland scratched for single runs in the next three innings to build a 6-3 lead. Round Rock threatened on several occasions and had the tying run at the plate twice. However, the Express couldn't get the one hit that would erase the deficit.
Chris Burke had a good night at the plate for Round Rock. Burke went 3 for 5 and had a pair of triples. Mike Hill also went 2 for 4.
Chad Qualls (1-6) got the loss. Darvin Withers (2-1) was the winner and Bert Snow notched his 11th save.
The two teams will meet again Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
