Nashville Sounds News Release

NASHVILLE — Shortstop Aaron Holbert's second home run of the year – a two-run shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the seventh inning – proved to be the difference as the Nashville Sounds salvaged a split of their four-game series against the Omaha Royals by posting a 4-3 victory in the matinee Memorial Day finale in front of 7,184 fans on Monday afternoon at Greer Stadium.

With the score tied at two in the seventh, Tike Redman reached base with a leadoff walk. Holbert took Omaha reliever Jason Turman's first pitch deep to left to give Nashville a lead it would not relinquish.

Holbert's home run made a winner out of starter Ryan Vogelsong. He pitched seven strong innings, allowing only two runs and four hits while striking out three to earn his sixth win of the season.

The Sounds opened the scoring in the second inning against the Royals' Jeremy Hill, who was making a spot start in place of Jimmy Osting (placed on the disabled list this week with a shoulder injury) Carlos Rivera led off the frame by depositing Hill's 2-1 offering into the picnic area in right-center field. Three straight two-out singles by Dave Doster, Shawn Gilbert, and Redman plated the second run of the inning.

Omaha scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Julius Matos led off the fourth with a single. He scored all the way from first on a double by Mike Kelly down the left field line. Kelly struck again in the sixth inning when he singled home Morgan Burkhart, who had doubled earlier in the inning.

Nashville reliever Jim Mann threw a scoreless eighth before Mark Corey closed the game to earn his 13th save of the season and pull into a tie for the PCL lead. He did allow a leadoff home run to Aaron Guiel before settling down and striking out Kelly, Benny Agbayani, and Alexis Gomez to finish off the Royals.

Outfielder Tike Redman swiped his PCL-leading 22nd bag for the Sounds in the first inning.

The Sounds finished the eight-game homestand with a 5-3 mark and open an eight-game road trip at Sec Taylor Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa tomorrow evening. It will be their third series against the Iowa Cubs. Nashville leads the season series by a 6-1 margin. Right-hander Nelson Figueroa (4-2) will start the 7:05 p.m. series opener for Nashville. He'll face Cubs right-hander Matt Bruback (3-5).

Nashville completes the trip with a four-game stop in Omaha, where they take on the Royals for the second series within a week. Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Thursday, June 5 when the Sounds welcome the Fresno Grizzlies (AAA-Giants) to town for the teams' lone 2003 meeting.
