Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Midland erupted for three 11th-inning runs to put away Corpus Christi 5-2 Thursday at Whataburger Field before 4,603.

Brett Vertigan and Franklin Barreto singled off Kyle Smith (3-7) to begin the frame and Viosergy Rosa's ground-rule double to right-center broke a 2-2 deadlock. An out later, Yairo Munoz stroked a two-run double off Jacob Dorris.

Jake Sanchez (7-5) earned the victory, Lou Trivino his first save. Trivino sidestepped a two-out walk and single by striking out the side.

Corpus Christi finished 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

The first seven innings featured a match-up of pitching excellence from former Atlantic Coast Conference aces, Midland's Daniel Gossett (Clemson) and Corpus Christi right-hander Trent Thornton (North Carolina). Each were chipped for a run via the long ball

Thornton, who fanned the side during the first, went on to book seven strikeouts against no walks and five hits. His final pitch count was 92 (65 strikes).

Gossett recorded seven strikeouts in a three-inning span before resting on a career-best 10. He scattered four hits and walked one. Gossett permitted one earned run for the eighth time in his last nine starts.

J.D. Davis' 19th home run, a lead-off blast to left, provided the Hooks with a 1-0 second-inning edge.

Midland matched in the fifth with two away, J.P. Sportman going deep the same direction for his fourth homer of 2016.

Andy Paz opened the 10th with a home run for the RockHounds off Smith, but the Hooks then countered with a run of their own, courtesy of Rosa's throwing error. Drew Ferguson kick-started the rally by dumping a double into right field and was sacrificed to third by Roberto Pena. Rosa fielded James Ramsay's grounder, but the Midland first baseman threw wide of Paz at the plate in an attempt to nab Ferguson.

Davis has a nine-game hitting streak.

Wigington Rumley Dunn & Blair provide Carlos Correa Bobbleheads for the first 2,000 fans Friday. First pitch is 7:05 with Corpus Christi's Francis Martes (8-5) meeting Brandon Mann (2-2). Fans enjoy Bud Light Friday Fireworks and the Texas Lottery Lucky Scratch Ticket Dance-Off postgame.
