Tulsa Drillers News Release
Caleb Adams almost single-handedly sent the Tulsa Drillers to their fourth straight loss Thursday night at ONEOK Field. The Arkansas left fielder had four hits, including a triple and a homer, and four runs batted in to lead the Travelers to a 7-2 victory over the Drillers. The defeat keeps Tulsa three games behind first-place Northwest Arkansas in the Texas League's North Division with 11 games remaining in the regular season.
The Travelers took an initial lead in the game with two runs in the third and never trailed. Zach Welz and Adams opened the third with back-to-back singles off Isaac Anderson. Anthony Phillips moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt before a wild pitch from Anderson brought in the first run of the game. Sean Coyle then doubled home Adams to make it 2-0.
The lead increased to three runs in the fourth. A two-out single by Adams plated Andrew Daniel who had reached base after being struck by a pitch from Anderson.
Cody Bellinger got the Drillers on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. After Kyle Farmer doubled to open the inning, Bellinger followed with his 19th home run of the season to pull Tulsa to within 3-2. The blast from the first baseman cleared the bullpens in right-center field, but it would prove to be Tulsa's final hit of the night.
The Travelers more than answered Bellinger's homer with three more runs in the sixth. The first run came on a solo homer from Adams, his fourth of the season. A two-out base hit by Alex Yarbrough plated the second run before a wild pitch by reliever Michael Johnson capped the three-run frame and upped the Arkansas lead to 6-2.
Adams' big night continued in the seventh inning. With two outs, Welz drew a walk and scored on a triple by Adams.
The Drillers finally retired the Arkansas outfielder in the ninth inning. Needing a double to hit for the cycle, Adams was set down on strikes by Joe Broussard.
Anderson (0-2) suffered his second Double-A loss in the defeat. The right-hander allowed three runs on six hits in his five innings of work.
Arkansas starter Alex Blackford worked five inning to pick up the win that improved his record to 8-7.
Three Travelers relievers combined on four shutout innings in back of Blackford to close out the game, holding the Drillers without a hit.
Tulsa will try to salvage the fourth and final game of the series with Arkansas Friday night at ONEOK Field. The pitching matchup for the finale will feature Seth Frankoff (2-3, 3.83 ERA) for the Drillers against Alex Klonowski (0-1, 6.75 ERA) of the Travelers. Starting time in downtown Tulsa is scheduled for 7:05pm.
