Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
ATLANTA - Grant Hufford of the Corpus Christi Hooks has been named 2016 Texas League Athletic Trainer of the Year.
President Mark O'Neal of the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) made the announcement Wednesday.
The top athletic trainers in each of the 16 minor leagues and the Dominican Summer League are recognized annually, as is the Minor League Coordinator of the Year in Sports Medicine.
"I am extremely proud to announce PBATS' Minor League Athletic Trainers of the Year," O'Neal said. "These athletic trainers have had such a huge impact on their organizations and have been named, by their peers, the best athletic trainer in their respective league. I'm thrilled to see the dedication and professionalism on display all throughout the minor leagues. This group represents the next wave of great Major League athletic trainers, and I couldn't be happier to award them for their hard work and excellence both on and off the field."
All winners are now eligible for the Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year award voted upon by the full membership of PBATS. That award will be conferred at the 2016 Major League Baseball Winter Meetings in Washington, D.C.
Hufford is in his second season with the Hooks. In 2015, he worked with the Glendale Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League, safeguarding prospects in the Astros, White Sox, Dodgers, Phillies, and Pirates organizations. Hufford was 2013 California League Athletic Trainer of the Year at Advanced-A Lancaster. Before a two-year stint in the Cal League, he was posted for two seasons at Class A Lexington, Kentucky. Hufford's initial Astros assignment came at Rookie League Greeneville, Tennessee, from 2008-10.
Hufford is a graduate of Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
