Mexican Powerhouse Club America to Take on First Division Runner Up Club San Luis

DENVER, CO (Monday, June 19, 2006)- The Colorado Rapids announced today an international doubleheader that will feature Mexican powerhouse Club América taking on Mexican First Division runner up Club San Luis on Thursday, July 20 at 8:30 p.m. (MT) at INVESCO Field at Mile High. The soccer extravaganza will kick off at 6:00 p.m. (MT) when the Colorado Rapids take on Chivas USA in Major League Soccer regular season action. This Rapids game, which was originally scheduled for July 21st, will also be the club's annual Budweiser Hispanic Heritage Night celebration.

Led by Mexican soccer star Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Club América is arguably the most famous club in México. "Las Águilas" (The Eagles), who were founded on October 18, 1916, have won 14 local Mexican championships, 6 Mexican Cup championships, 5 Mexican Champions Cups, 2 Interamerican Cups and one CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Club América will represent CONCACAF at this year's FIFA World Club Championship that will be played in Japan in the month of December and will showcase teams such as Barcelona FC and the winner of each one of the FIFA Confederations.

Club San Luis, who were a Cinderella story last season in the Mexican First Division tournament, reached the championship game after starting the season fighting against relegation to the Second Division. Led by head coach Raul Arias, the club reached the Clausura 2006 Championship game, defeating the defending Champions, Club Toluca, in the semifinals and Club Atlante in the quarterfinals.

Both teams will arrive in Colorado early in the week of July 16th as they continue their preseason in preparation for the 2006 Apertura Tournament, which will kick off in August.

Tickets for the international doubleheader go on sale Saturday, June 24th at 10:00 a.m. and will be available via phone at 303-830-TIXS, at all Ticketmaster outlets or online at ColoradoRapids.com. Ticket prices start at just $15 and group discounts are available for groups of 10 or more by calling 303-825-GOAL. A special pre-sale opportunity will be available for all fans in attendance at the Rapids home game on Wednesday, June 21st against Chivas USA at 7:30 p.m. All fans entering the gates that evening can purchase tickets for the doubleheader at the advance ticket window inside INVESCO Field at Mile High.
