BRAVO NAMED GALAXY ASSISTANT COACH: The Los Angeles Galaxy announced on June 15 that three-time MLS All-Star and former UCLA and Colorado Rapids assistant coach Paul Bravo has been named an assistant coach with the club. As an assistant coach at UCLA, Bravo worked closely with head coach Jorge Salcedo, a former Galaxy defender, helping the program to consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and Pac-10 Conference titles. In his two seasons at UCLA, the team posted a 26-9-5 overall record and a 13-3-2 Pac-10 conference record. From 2002-03, Bravo was an assistant coach with the Colorado Rapids following his playing career for the Rapids from 1997-2001. In his first season with Colorado, he helped lead the team to the 1997 MLS Cup championship game. The three-time MLS All-Star selection (1996 with the San Jose Clash, 1998, 1999 with Colorado) was the first player in Rapids history to record 100 career points and finished his six-year career with 131 points on 52 goals and 27 assists.
GALAXY STRIKE FIRST, BUT FALL TO NEW YORK: Despite an early goal by Herculez Gomez in the 25th minute, the Galaxy could not hold on to the 1-0 lead at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on June 17. The New York Red Bulls used a goal in the 27th minute by Edson Buddle to tie the game and then just moments later took the lead for good on a goal by Jean Philippe- Peguero. Despite peppering the New York goal with 10 second half shots, the Galaxy could not find the equalizer and dropped its eighth game in nine matches.
A MOMENTARY LEAD: When Herculez Gomez scored for the Los Angeles Galaxy in the 25th minute on June 17 against the Red Bulls, it was the first time in 2006 that the Galaxy had scored the first goal of the game. While the lead only lasted for two minutes before New York tied the score, it was the first time the Galaxy had led in a game since April 29, when Cobi Jones scored against Real Salt Lake in the 26th minute to give L.A. the advantage.
LOSING FEELING: The Galaxy loss on June 17 to the New York Red Bulls dropped the club's record to 2-10-2. The Galaxy has only had one losing season in team history, enduring a 9-12-9 campaign in 2003. The Galaxy has now lost eight of its last nine matches, last winning against Real Salt Lake on April 29.
