Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Binghamton, New York- The Binghamton Mets broke open a 2-2 game with six runs in the sixth inning and five more in the seventh en route to a 13-2 win over the Portland Sea Dogs Monday night. All nine batters hit in both the sixth and seventh innings for the Mets. Over the course of the two-inning rally, Binghamton racked up 11 hits, including three home runs, against the trio of Brock Huntzinger (5-8), Caleb Clay, and Cesar Cabral.

The shelling started innocently enough with Brahiam Maldonado crushing a solo home run off Huntzinger to lead off the sixth inning, giving the Mets a 3-2 lead. After another hit, Huntzinger was replaced by Clay. After a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Jonathan Malo and Matt den Dekker delivered RBI singles. Juan Lugares brought home another run on a sacrifice fly. Jordany Valdespin followed that up with a two-run home run to cap the inning.

Clay's problems extended into the seventh. Maldonado started the frame off with a triple. Raul Reyes then smacked Binghamton's third long ball in two innings, a two-run drive that gave the Mets an eight-run lead. The next two batters reached and Cabral came in to relieve Clay. Malo singled off Cabral to load the bases. After a den Dekker sacrifice fly, and a ground out by Lugares, Valdespin struck again, this time with a double down the right field line to score two more runs, making it 13-2 Binghamton.

Valdespin was the chief culprit against Portland. The shortstop went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and 4 RBI on the night. However, the whole Mets offense contributed with all nine starters reaching base at least once and eight of the nine recording an RBI. Between Clay and Cabral, the Sea Dogs bullpen gave up nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits over just three innings of work.

Prior to the offensive outburst, Tim Federowicz had tied the game with a sacrifice fly RBI in the top half of the sixth inning. Binghamton led 2-0 after a run each in the second and third innings. Chih-Hsien Chiang cut that in half with his team-leading 18 home run of the year in the fourth inning against Robert Carson (3-8). Chiang went 2-for-4 and is now the Eastern League's leading hitter with a .339 average on the season. Carson won his first game since June 17.

The Sea Dogs and Mets will play the second of their three-game series tomorrow night. The last of the three-game set takes place Wednesday night. After that, Portland returns to Hadlock Field on Thursday, July 28 for the start of a four-game series against the Altoona Curve. That night will feature Mike Piazza's Dog Tricks and the second Bark in the Park night this season. On July 30, the Sea Dogs will host Picnic in the Park prior to Saturday night's game against the Curve. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
