Eastern League Names Pitcher and Player of the Week

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of July 18th through July 24th:
Binghamton Mets outfielder Brahiam Maldonado has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of July 18th-July 24th. The 5'11", 205 lb. slugger batted .450 (9-for-20) with one double, one triple, three home runs, nine RBI, five runs scored and a 1.050 slugging percentage in six games for the B-Mets last week. Maldonado kicked off his week by going 1-for-3 with a three-run triple and a sacrifice fly in a 7-2 win at Portland on Tuesday night. He followed that up by homering in back-to-back games on Wednesday and Thursday at Portland and capped off his week by going 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI to lead the B-Mets to a 10-1 win at Reading on Sunday. The 25-year old had at least one hit in each of the five games he started last week for the B-Mets and also drove in at least one run in four of those games. Maldonado, who is a native of Carolina, Puerto Rico, led all Eastern League players in slugging percentage (1.050) and OPS (1.459) last week. He also tied for second in home runs (3) and RBI (9) and ranked fourth in batting average (.450). Brahiam, who has a team-high 18 home runs in 95 games for the B-Mets this season, was selected by the New York Mets in the 10th round of the 2004 draft out of St. Francis High School in Carolina, Puerto Rico.
Austin Hyatt, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Reading Phillies, has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 18th-July 24th. The 25-year old made two appearances for the R-Phils last week and had a record of 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in 13.0 innings pitched. Hyatt, who is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, made his first start of the week on Monday at New Hampshire and gave up one run on four hits over seven innings. He struck out 10 batters and walked two while earning the win. In his second appearance of the week the 6'2", 180 lb. hurler picked up another win after limiting Binghamton to just one run on four hits and three walks while striking out six batters over six innings in the R-Phils 3-2 victory on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. Hyatt led all Eastern League pitchers in strikeouts (16) last week and was also ranked among the weekly leaders in wins (2-tied 1st), innings pitched (13.0-tied 4th), batting average against (.178-6th) and ERA (1.38-9th). For the season he is currently tied for third in wins (9) and ranks fourth in strikeouts (125). Austin, who was on the Eastern Division roster at the Eastern League All-Star Game earlier this month, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 15th round of the 2009 draft out of the University of Alabama.
