Aeros Plagued by Big Inning in Loss to Thunder

AKRON, OH - The Akron Aeros rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but could not overcome a seven-run Trenton sixth inning as they lost game one of a three-game series against the Thunder 9-8 Monday at Canal Park.

Right-handed pitcher Adam Miller suffered the loss for Akron pitching an inning and one third out of the bullpen, allowing five earned runs on five hits, walking two and striking out none. Left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz got the start for the Aeros pitching 4.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits, walking three and striking out six.

Switch pitcher Pat Venditte picked up the win for the Thunder tossing three innings of relief, allowing one earned run on two hits, walking one and striking out four. Right-hander Ryan Pope recorded the last four outs to earn the save.

The Aeros (54-49) got things started in the bottom of the first inning. Ben Copeland reached on a fielding error to open the inning and advanced to second on a Karexon Sanchez sacrifice bunt. Following a fly out, Chun Chen doubled him home to give the Aeros a 1-0 lead. Chen got to third when Raul Padron reached on a fielding error. Kyle Bellows followed with a single scoring Chen to make it 2-0.

The Thunder (54-48) got a run back in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Damon Sublett walked and advanced to second on a Jose Gil single. Addison Maruszak followed with an RBI single scoring Sublett and cutting the Akron lead to 2-1.

Maruszak tied the game 2-2 with an RBI double in the top of the fourth inning.

Akron retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ben Copeland led off with a double and advanced to third on a Sanchez single. Matt McBride doubled Copeland home to give the Aeros a 3-2 lead and chase Cory Arbiso from the game. Arbiso was replaced by Venditte, who allowed an RBI sacrifice fly to Chen to make it 4-2. Padron and Bellows followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to increase the Akron lead to 6-2.

The lead was short lived as Trenton rallied in the top of the sixth inning. Melky Mesa and Sublett opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Mesa scored on a double play to make it 6-3. Maruszak followed with a double and Yadil Mujica walked to put runners on first and second. Ray Kruml and Jose Pirela rapped back-to-back RBI singles to cut the Akron lead to 6-5. Following a pitching change, Zolio Almonte walked to load the bases. Rob Lyerly hit a ground-rule two RBI double scoring Kruml and Pirela and giving the Thunder a 7-6 lead. Trenton added two more runs in the inning to take a 9-6 lead.

Akron rallied for two in the bottom of the eighth inning, but drew no closer as Trenton went on to the win.

The Aeros and Thunder will continue their three-game series Tuesday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland, who is 7-4 with a 4.08 ERA in 2011. He will face right-handed pitcher Craig Heyer, who is 7-6 with a 4.09 ERA this season. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on Fox Sports 1350 AM or online at sportsradio1350.com.
