Binghamton Mets outfielder Brahiam Maldonado has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of July 18th-24th. Over the course of the week, the native of Puerto Rico turned in a .450 batting average (9-for-20), including a double, a triple, three home runs, five runs scored, and nine RBI.
Maldonado kicked off his week by driving in four runs on a bases-loaded triple and sacrifice fly against the Portland Sea Dogs on Tuesday. He followed that performance by ripping a home run in consecutive contests on Wednesday and Thursday. The 25-year-old capped his week by going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run against the Reading Phillies on Sunday night.
Maldonado leads the B-Mets in games played (95), home runs (18), triples (3), and RBI (52). He led all Eastern League players in slugging percentage (1.050) and OPS (1.459) last week. He tied for second in home runs and RBI and was fourth in batting average.
Maldonado split time between St. Lucie (High-A) and Binghamton (AA) last year, hitting .282 with 25 doubles, four triples, 21 home runs, 58 runs scored and 56 RBI combined at both levels. Currently in his seventh pro season, he was selected in the 10th round of the June 2004 draft out of St. Francis HS in Loiza, Puerto Rico.
Maldonado and the B-Mets (41-61) are in action tonight against the Portland Sea Dogs at NYSEG Stadium with first pitch set for 6:35pm.
