Mets Stun Crabs with Improbable 6-4 Comeback Win

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (July 1, 2014) - The St. Lucie Mets put together a stunning ninth inning comeback to shock the Charlotte Stone Crabs 6-4 on Tuesday at Charlotte Sports Park.
Down to their last strike with the bases empty and trailing 4-3, Maikis De La Cruz kept the game alive with an infield single. Jeff McNeil followed by taking a walk on a 3-2 pitch. Eudy Pina, who provided two go-ahead hits in the previous three games, singled to left to plate De La Cruz and tie the game 4-4.
Ryan Garton, who blew the save, appeared to be on the road to recovery when he got ahead of Gilbert Gomez 0-2. But Gomez battled back to run the count full, then ripped a two-run double to left to put the Mets ahead 6-4.
The Stone Crabs put the first two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but Paul Sewald caught a pop up on a bunt attempt, got a fielders choice ground out and finished off the game by inducing a fly ball to left off the bat of Tyler Goeddel.
It was Sewald's fourth save in his last five appearances. He has not allowed a run since May 18.
The game appeared to be out of reach for the Mets when Maxx Tissenbaum laced a two-out, two-run double off of Jake Kuebler in the seventh to extend Charlotte's lead to 4-1.
However, the Mets scored two crucial runs in the eighth to give themselves a chance. Pina was hit by Parker Markel to start the inning. Gomez came up and clobbered a triple to dead center that cut the deficit to 4-2. Gomez scored on a shallow sac fly to left off the bat of Cam Maron to make it 4-3. The throw from short stop Leonardo Reginatto looked like it would be in plenty of time to get Gomez at the plate, but the ball nailed field umpire Scott Costello who was standing in the way and it never reached home.
The two teams went back and fourth early. Tissenbaum tripled and scored in the second to put the Crabs up 1-0. Pina doubled to right in the third to bring home McNeil and tie the game 1-1.
Patrick Leonard put the Crabs back in front 2-1 on an RBI triple in the fifth.
Mets starter Cory Mazzoni gave up two runs and six hits in five innings. He struck out six.
Crabs starter Reinaldo Lopez limited the Mets to one unearned run and four hits in six innings.
Garton took the loss and blown save.
Tim Peterson was credited with the win. He pitched a scoreless ninth.
Gomez and Pina had two hits apiece for the Mets.
The start game was delayed by two hours and two minutes due to unplayable field conditions and storms in the area.
The Mets (48-32, 8-3) and Stone Crabs (34-46, 3-10) meet again at Charlotte Sports Park on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard on www.stluciemets.com with the Voice of the Mets Adam MacDonald.
