Nola Strong, But Threshers Shut Out

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Aaron Nola turned in an impressive four innings in his Threshers' home debut, but Clearwater was blanked by Dunedin in a 1-0 loss on Tuesday night.

In his second professional appearance, Nola worked four near-perfect innings, allowing just a one-out single to Andy Fermin in the second inning.

The Phillies' first-round pick struck out three batters without issuing a walk, and finished having thrown 48 pitches - 37 for strikes. He threw just 13 pitches or less in all four frames.

Clearwater (4-8) was limited to five hits while being held scoreless through six innings by Blue Jays starter Kendall Graveman. The Threshers finished with six hits total, but did not mount multiple base runners in any inning.

After Kevin Walter tossed three shutout innings in relief of Nola, the Blue Jays (4-8) plated the game's lone run in the eighth inning.

Christian Lopes blooped a single to right to start the frame against Ramon Oviedo (0-1), and Peter Mooney sacrificed Lopes over to second. Oviedo got Emilio Guerrero to pop up for the second out, but Dwight Smith Jr. delivered for Dunedin with a double to left-center, plating Lopes with the night's only tally.

Justin Jackson (4-1) earned the victory for Dunedin with a perfect top of the seventh. Arik Sikula set the side down in order in the ninth to earn his 16th save.

Clearwater will take on the Blue Jays in Dunedin for game two of the series on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Threshers Live! the pre game show will kick off at 6:15 p.m. on the Threshers' broadcast network.
