Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, FL - For the second straight night the Hammerheads outhit the Cardinals, but the offensive attack did not lead to a win as Jupiter lost to Palm Beach 7-3 on Wednesday at Roger Dean Stadium.
After collecting 10 hits in Tuesday's loss the Sharks picked up 12 hits on Wednesday including four from Anthony Gomez but for the second night in a row double digit hits only led to three runs.
Brad Penny made the start for Jupiter on Wednesday in his first professional action since getting released by the Kansas City Royals in Spring Training. Penny had a so-so night as he ended up allowing four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings. He struck out two and didn't issue a walk.
After Jupiter picked up a 1-0 lead in the second on a RBI single by Ryan Goetz, the Birds scored three times off Penny in the third, although only one ball was hit hard.
Cesar Valera started the inning with a bloop single to right before Penny plunked Dante Rosenberg. After Charlie Tilson bunted both runners into scoring position, Illdemaro Vargas would reach on a chopper to short to plate Valera.
Caldwell would then narrowly missed his fifth home run in four days when he hit a triple off the top of the wall in center to drive home a pair.
With one out in the fifth and runners on first and second thanks to a pair of singles, Penny struck out Vargas with his 72nd pitch of the night. That would be it for the righty as Colby Suggs would enter the game.
Caldwell would rudely greet Suggs to the game with a single up the middle to score Valera and make it 4-1 Cards.
The Sharks would chip away in the seventh inning doing all of their damage with two outs. After Gomez and Colin Moran reached on back-to-back singles, Viosergy Rosa hit a double into the left-center gap to drive them both in and make it a 4-3 game.
The Cardinals would strike back in the top of the eighth as Charlie Tilson hit a bases clearing triple to give the Birds a 7-3 lead.
The Hammerheads and Cardinals will play the final game of this Fins vs. Feathers series on Thursday night. It will be the first night of Mega Bash so there will be a special 6:05 p.m. start. Tomorrow's festivities will include postgame fireworks and live music by the Caribbean Chillers, a Jimmy Buffett tribute band. Tickets are still available.
