
Mets Fall to Hammerheads 5-4

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Jupiter Hammerheads edged the St. Lucie Mets 5-4 on Saturday night at Tradition Field.
Derek Dietrich hit a solo home run for the Hammerheads in the seventh to extend their lead to 5-3, and the Hammerheads held on for the hard-fought victory.
The Mets got a run back in their half of the seventh on Jairo Perez's RBI ground out, but the Mets never could come up with a big hit.
Phil Evans doubled with one out in the eighth but Brad Mincey struck out Gilbert Gomez and Eudy Pina to strand the tying run at second.
Colby Suggs struck out the side in the ninth despite allowing a a one-out single to L.J. Mazzilli.
All told, the last five outs made by the Mets came on strikeouts.
The Mets took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning, but it quickly unraveled for start Seth Lugo. Blake Barber hit a two-run homer to tie the game 2-2.
After Lugo recorded the second out, he allowed a walk, a single and another walk to load the bases. Then on a 1-2 count, Anthony Gomez singled up the middle to score two runs and make it 4-2. The Hammerheads would lead the rest of the way.
The Mets got it to 4-3 in the sixth on Gavin Cecchini's two-out RBI single. However Dietrich launched homer deep to right in the seventh against Jake Kuebler to put Jupiter back up by two, 5-3.
Austin Brice got the win for Jupiter. He limited the Mets to three runs, two earned, in 5 2/3 innings.
Lugo took the loss. All four runs he gave up in his six innings came in the fourth. He struck out five and walked two.
Mazzilli led the Mets with three hits.
The Mets outhit the Hammerheads 11-10. Pina was the only Met in the lineup to not get a hit, but he reached third on an error and scored in the third to give the Mets a 2-0 lead.
The Mets (70-60, 30-31) will try split the four-game series against Jupiter (47-82, 20-40) when the two teams meet for the final time this season on Sunday at 1 p.m.
