Mets Defeat Mighty Mussels 8-6

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The St. Lucie Mets defeated the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 8-6 in game 1 of a six-game series on Tuesday night at Clover Park.

The Mets were out hit in the game but took advantage of 10 walks by Mussels pitching, including three walks in a row with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to force home three runs to tie the game 4-4.

Brandon McIlwain delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the sixth to make it 5-4. McIlwain later distracted reliever Juan Pichardo into a balk while on third base. McIlwain was awarded home plate for a 6-4 lead. Jose Peroza followed with a broken bat two-run single to expand the Mets lead to 8-4.

The Mussels got a two-out, two-run single from Misael Urbina in the eighth inning to cut the Mets lead to 8-6. Reyson Santos then struck out Keoni Cavaco to strand the tying run at second base.

Mets reliever Luis Montas pitched a scoreless ninth inning on just eight pitches to earn his second save.

Drake Nightengale (3-3) pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts to get the win.

Jaylen Palmer went 2 for 3 with a double, walk, RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base from the leadoff spot.

Peroza was 2 for 5 with two RBI.

Cole Kleszcz and Anthony Walters each walked three times.

The Mets (29-26) and Mighty Mussels (31-24) play the second game of their series at Clover Park on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:10 p.m.
