Syracuse, NY - The Indianapolis Indians spoiled the Syracuse Mets' comeback effort with a two-run top of the ninth inning en route to a 7-6 win on Tuesday night for the visitors in the series opener at NBT Bank Stadium. The Mets scored all six of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, including a pair of two-run homers from Danny Espinosa and Travis Taijeron.
Indianapolis (51-49) entered the top of the ninth inning trailing, 6-5. Christian Kelley got the rally started with a single. Then with two outs, Cole Tucker walked to put two runners on base. A wild pitch from Mets reliever Tim Peterson advanced both runners into scoring position with two outs. After that, Erik Gonzalez delivered a two-run ground-rule double to put Indy back in front for good at 7-6.
Syracuse (50-51) entered the bottom of the sixth trailing 4-0 and had just two hits off Indianapolis starter Eduardo Vera to that point. In the sixth, nine Mets batters came up, totaling five hits and six runs in the frame. Grégor Blanco got things started in the bottom of the sixth with a one-out walk. With Blanco on at first, Espinosa blasted his 15th home run of the season, a two-run shot to cut the deficit in half, making it 4-2 Indy. After Espinosa's homer, Ruben Tejada doubled down the right-field line. One out later, Dilson Herrera singled to score Tejada from second and make it 4-3 Indianapolis. Herrera then stole second and scored the game-tying run on a Luis Guillorme single. Moments later, with Guillorme on second and two-outs, Taijeron drilled his 22nd homer of the year, giving the Mets their first lead of the night at 6-4.
Indianapolis responded with a home run of its own in the top of the seventh. Tucker crushed a solo shot over the right-field wall, trimming the Syracuse lead to 6-5.
The Indians threatened to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning. Ke'Bryan Hayes started the inning with a double and moved over to third on a groundout. But, Syracuse reliever Daniel Zamora came on for a timely strikeout to end the inning and strand the tying run at third base.
Indianapolis opened the scoring in the second inning. Will Craig led off the inning with a single, Pablo Reyes bunted him over to second, and Jason Martin drilled a homer over the right-field wall, making it 2-0 Indians.
Indy extended its lead in the top of the fifth. Jake Elmore singled to start the frame, Indians starting pitcher Eduardo Vera moved him over to second on a sacrifice bunt, and Tucker drove Elmore in on a two-out RBI single, giving the Indians a 3-0 advantage.
The Indians added to their lead in the sixth. Hayes singled and Craig doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. From there, Reyes singled to plate Hayes and make it 4-0. It would have been 5-0 if not for a beautiful throw from Syracuse left fielder Aaron Altheer to get Craig at home plate and prevent another run from crossing.
Syracuse returns to the diamond Wednesday at noon for game two of this homestand against Indianapolis.
