Kingsport, Tenn. - With a two-hour rain delay to the start of Friday's ball game, the Royals bats were cool all night as the Mets took the series-opening matchup 9-1.

With no one out in the bottom of the second, Kingsport took a 1-0 lead after Cristopher Pujols scored on a wild pitch. In the next at bat, Tanner Murphy launched his second homer of the season to left field, a two-run blast that padded the lead to 3-0.

Burlington did answer, though. In the top of the fourth, Burle Dixon brought home Jake Means on an RBI single to cut the Royals deficit to 3-1. Beyond that, Kingsport hurlers Junior Santos, Jefferson Escorcha and Nick MacDonald held opposing hitters to just the one run on six hits.

The Mets put the game well out of reach in the bottom of the eighth. Pujols cranked a two-run long ball of his own, Brett Baty hit a bases-clearing double and Anthony Dirocie smacked an RBI single to put Kingsport ahead 9-1.

Escorcha earned the win for the Mets and now has a 6-0 record on the season, while MacDonald picked up his first save. Royals starter Angel Zerpa took the loss and moves to 4-3 in 2019.

First pitch in game two of the series between Burlington and Kingsport is set for Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
