New York Red Bulls News Release
Mathis Sees Specialist: The MetroStars announced today that forward/midfielder Clint Mathis will undergo a procedure tomorrow to repair a right inguinal hernia injury. The United States World Cup star is expected to be sidelined for four weeks following the procedure and future rehabilitation.
Specialist Richard Cattey, who is based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, confirmed the injury this afternoon during an examination. He will perform the procedure tomorrow morning in Milwaukee. The Conyers, Georgia native is expected to rejoin the team for the latter parts of preseason training in Florida, after two weeks of rest. When he joins the team, he will undergo an aerobic program as part of the rehabilitation of the injury.
Lisi Injured: MetroStars midfielder Mark Lisi is suffering from a stress fracture in his right ankle on his lateral side. The Clemson product will be recovering for 2 - 4 weeks. The injury occurred during the off-season and it has been nagging him in the early part of preseason, resulting in the evaluation.
Clark and Magee Help Tame the Rapids: MetroStars midfielder Ricardo Clark and midfielder/forward Mike Magee helped the United States Under-20 National Team to a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids last weekend at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The duo started the match for the U-20s and played the first half, which saw the U.S. take a 1-0 lead at the interval.
The match was the first of the training camp for the team, who are preparing for the Madeira International Tournament in Portugal in early March. The U.S. will travel to Portugal on February 27, where they will compete tournament. The U.S. faces Portugal on March 3 at 6:00 a.m. ET, Norway on March 5 at 9:00 a.m. ET, and a Madeira Regional Select Team on March 7 at 5:00 a.m. ET. The U-20s are gearing up for the FIFA World Youth Championship in the United Arab Emirates that features games against Paraguay on March 27, Germany on March 30, and South Korea on April 2.
Weekly Rewind: The MetroStars opened preseason training in Bradenton, FL by defeating the United States Under-17 National Team 4-0 in a scrimmage at the IMG Academy last week. Newly acquired MetroStars forward Jaime Moreno notched the first goal in the rout, while midfield preseason invitees Daniel Garnero, Mario Rosas, and Dillon Sheppard each tallied. Metros' second round draft pick Eddie Gaven played the first half for the U.S.
The "Red and Black" continued training at the facility and faced-off with Head Coach Bob Bradley's former team, the Chicago Fire, last weekend in the team's second scrimmage match. The Metros dropped a 2-0 result in a match that saw MetroStars' all-time leading scorer Giovanni Savarese start and play the first half as he attempts to make the team as a preseason trialist. Bradley continues to experiment and assemble the roster for the upcoming 2003 MLS season, which kicks off on Saturday, April 12 against the Columbus Crew at 7:30 p.m. ET at Giants Stadium.
The MetroStars will continue training at the IMG Academy this week with the next scrimmage scheduled for Monday, March 3 against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
